Adsense Google program to show ads on a website and earn money with it. These ads are created with Google Adwords.
Ad Group A group of ads (in Google Adwords) within a campaign.
Affiliate Marketing Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. The industry has four core players: the merchant (also known as ‘retailer’ or ‘brand’), the network (that contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the payments), the publisher (also known as ‘the affiliate’), and the customer. The market has grown in complexity to warrant a secondary tier of players, including affiliate management agencies, super-affiliates and specialized third party vendors.
Ad Views The amount of times that an ad is shown to someone (exposure).
Adwords (Google) Online advertisement software by Google.
Algorithm The rules a search engine applies for ranking and analyzing web pages.
Banner (Horizontal) (image-) ad on a website (or email). Usually clickable.
Bookmark Someone saves the link to a web page for later use.
Browser A software program to view web pages and content on the world wide web.
Click The registration of a mouse click on an ad to visit the advertiser.
Click Ratio The extent to which an advertisement is clicked by a user relative to the total number of times the ad is displayed. This measures the degree of success of a (text) ads.
Click-Through This represents the behavior of a user on the website from a visitors position. The visitor clicked a hyperlink. This link can be in various forms such as a button or a text ad.
Conversion Successfully bringing in a prospect. This means that a visitor has done what you want. For example, downloading a catalog, a product purchase, or requesting a newsletter. Please also read my article: What is Conversion?
Conversion Rate The ratio between the number of visits and the number of times this resulted in the desired action (e.g. sales, download).
Cookie A cookie is a text file that a website can place on the visiting computer. This allows the website to track visitors and store information like usernames and shopping baskets.
CPC Cost Per Click. The (average) price paid per click on an ad.
CPL Cost Per Lead. The (average) costs of ad clicks compared to the amount of conversions.
CPM Cost Per Mille. An agreed price per 1000 views.
CTR Click Through Rate. From one source to the next.
Deep Link Direct reference to a specific page or topic on a website.
Directory Folder or directory on the computer/server where data can be stored.
Description The description of a web page. This is also shown in the results of Google, directly below the page title.
HTML Hypertext Markup Language. This is the general language that many sites are programmed with.
HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol. This abbreviation stands for the system on which all web pages work.
Intranet Internal network where only authorized users have access. Usually only reachable from certain (work) locations.
Landing Page The page where the visitor first arrives when a URL is entered. Often landing pages used for campaigns.
Meta Search Engine A search engine that uses other search engine results to show results (
PageRank (TM) This technique is used by the Google search engine and ensures that the most relevant and highly rated sites are on top of the results page, instead of a list in alphabetical order.
Paid Inclusion Fee for being included in the search results list. The position is still determined by the algorithmic rules of the search engine.
PPC Pay-Per-Click. An advertiser pays per click for its advertisements (e.g. to Google).
ROI Return On Investment. The extent and speed of the invested amount is recovered.
RSS RSS Rich Site Summary (originally RDF Site Summary, often dubbed Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a “feed”, “web feed”,[3] or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship.
Sandbox Some new websites score relatively high in the beginning of their existence and then to disappear from the rankings for several months. After that period they scramble up to their ‘real’ position. This is because Google has placed them in the Sandbox.
Search Engine A service that uses specified keyword for searching websites that are best fit for those keywords.
Search Engine Marketing Search engine marketing (SEM) is a form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization (both on-page and off-page) as well as through advertising (paid placements, contextual advertising, and paid inclusions).

Search Engine Submission Submitting a website to a search engine, using relevant keywords.
Search Robot, Spider The “machine” (script) that searches sites to add or update the search engines search results.
Skyscrapers & Rectangles A standing banner. Suitable for on the side of a website to appear.
SPAM If a recipient ureceives nsolicited (commercial) e-mail and perceive it as unpleasant. View my articles on cookies, privacy and law.
Text Ad Advertising on search engines entirely consisting of text. An ad that is designed to display a concise, action-oriented text with a link to a website. Because no images are used, text links are easy to make and can be downloaded faster.
Title Displayed in the blue top bar of Internet Explorer as the title of teh web page. Google also displays the web page title in the search results.
Tracking & Tracing URLs can be tracked in order to assign used sources (campaigns) to a website visit in order to measure the success rate per source.
URL Uniform Resource Locator. The global address of documents and other resources can be found on the Internet.
Usability Test A usability test is nothing but a test for the visitor experience and convenience. This way, possible hurdles that users may encounter when using your website can be fixed.
User-Interface This is the system with which the user will come into contact. A good user interface provides effective productivity of the user.
View If a text ad (or something else for that matter) is displayed on a computer screen. The more impressions (views), the higher the chance of clicking.

First of all I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Thank you!
